This world is noisy, chaotic and confusing. There are countless voices competing for our attention pulling us many different directions. How can we know God’s voice in the midst of the noise? Even in church everyone has a different opinion on what we should be doing and where we should go. Isn’t there a clear cut way just block out the thousands of thoughts that consume our mind and just hear directly from the Lord?
How many times have we finally sat down at the end of a busy day and just thought, “I have no idea what I’m supposed to be doing.” We say a quick prayer and go to sleep hoping tomorrow will bring more clarity. Unfortunately tomorrow will be just as chaotic and noisy as today, unless we make a conscious decision to change something.
Hearing God’s voice and leading for your life doesn’t just happen because you want it to. A desire to follow the Lord is wonderful, but if it is not coupled with taking time to listen for His voice and subsequently obeying that voice your desire will only amount to confusion and loss of direction.
Growing up we called our prayer and bible reading time, “quiet time.” I never though much of it then, but now I think that is brilliant. Our souls crave moments throughout the day where we turn off all the noise, quiet our minds before the Lord, pray and search His word for His voice.
My favorite part of my morning devotion is the fact that people aren’t trying to get a hold of me at 6 in the morning. And even if they were my phone has a great feature called “Do Not Disturb” and if I am having my quiet time, I keep that feature turned ON so that my quiet time can remain QUIET.
As we make a habit of getting into the presence of the Lord we learn to recognize the peace of His presence in our lives. Peace is one of the fruits of the Spirit and it’s one of the most important to have. Aren’t you tired of feeling stressed out all the time? Aren’t you tired of worrying about a million different things at once? It’s wonderful to just quiet everything and let the peace of God wash over you.
I believe we should have peace ALL THE TIME. After all we serve the Prince of Peace! (Isaiah 9:6) In fact, I believe if we are living in obedience to God we will have that peace. When trying to make decisions we should use that peace as a test.
Colossians 3:15-16 (ESV) And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Peace can rule in our hearts! I love that it uses the word rule. Peace should overtakes and remain in control of our hearts. When the Bible uses the word heart here, it doesn’t mean the physical thump thump inside our chest, but the state of our soul. Whenever we LOSE that peace it should be a sign that something is not right. Maybe we’ve wandered down a path God didn’t intend, or maybe we’ve taken on responsibility we weren’t supposed to.
Whatever the reason for loss of peace the solution to regain that peace is to STOP and STEP BACK into the presence of God. The scripture told us to get into His word, get wisdom from others, to worship Him and to be thankful. Even when we feel overwhelmed, we can still remind ourselves to be thankful and remember that God has not left us. He is still on our side. He is still wanting to speak to us and lead us.
As we make a practice of sitting silently before the Lord and seeking His voice we will learn more and more to recognize His voice from the midst of the chaos. The best thing about being a Christian is that we don’t have to go through stuff alone! We have a whole community of believers we can come to and seek counsel.
I believe in seeking wisdom, but we should use wisdom in who we talk to. Only go to a select few and don’t pick your best friends. Pick people who are further down life’s journey than you. Pick someone who can give you good Biblical advice. Pick someone who will pray with you and remember it isn’t there job to tell you what to do, but to confirm what the Lord is speaking to you.
If you’re feeling lost right now I want to you to be encouraged, you won’t stay that way. Seek the Lord and don’t be afraid to ask for help. God wants you to hear His voice and to lead you everyday. Quiet the noise, turn off the phone and let the peace of God rule in your heart.
